What is Callan Online?
Callan Online is an online language school offering structured, live lessons based on the Callan Method. The method is designed to help you improve your speaking, listening, pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar through continuous active practice.
During your lessons, your teacher asks questions at a natural, challenging pace and encourages you to answer in complete sentences. You receive immediate support and correction, while regular revision helps you remember and use what you have learned.
Rather than spending most of the lesson listening to explanations or completing written exercises, you spend a large proportion of your time actively speaking and responding.
Is Callan Online an app or private tutoring?
Callan Online is an online language school providing live, private one-to-one lessons with real teachers. Your lessons are not delivered by an automated programme, prerecorded course or artificial intelligence tutor.
You meet your teacher online at the time you have booked and receive individual correction, guidance and encouragement throughout the lesson. Because the sessions are private, the teacher can concentrate entirely on your speaking, listening, pronunciation and progress.
Students also receive access to the Callan App and online learning resources for additional practice between lessons. These digital resources support your course, but they do not replace your live classes.
Can I book a free welcome session?
Yes. New students can book a free welcome session before purchasing a learning plan. It gives you the opportunity to meet one of our teachers, experience the online classroom and learn more about the Callan Method without making a financial commitment.
During the session, the teacher will introduce you to the way Callan lessons work, assess your current language level and answer any initial questions you may have. This will help you understand what to expect before beginning regular lessons.
After the session, you can choose the course and learning plan that best suit your level, availability and goals.
Can I check my level before starting the course?
Yes. Your teacher will assess your current level during your free welcome session, so you do not need to choose a Stage yourself or start the course from the beginning unnecessarily.
The purpose of the assessment is to identify the most appropriate starting point for you. The teacher will consider how well you understand spoken language, how accurately and confidently you answer questions, and how comfortably you use the vocabulary and grammar expected at different levels.
This allows you to begin at a point that is challenging enough to help you progress, but not so difficult that you cannot participate effectively.
How does the level test work?
The level test is a spoken assessment carried out by a teacher during your welcome session. The teacher will ask you a series of questions, beginning with relatively simple language and gradually increasing the level of difficulty.
You should answer as naturally as you can. There is no need to prepare, memorise anything or worry about making mistakes. The aim is not to pass or fail, but to understand your current ability and find the best place for you to begin.
The teacher will assess areas such as:
- Your understanding of spoken questions.
- Your ability to form complete answers.
- Your use of vocabulary and grammar.
- Your pronunciation and speaking fluency.
- How quickly and confidently you can respond.
At the end of the assessment, the teacher will tell you the recommended Stage or course starting point and explain the next steps.
What happens during a typical Callan lesson?
A typical Callan lesson is a focused, fast-paced one-to-one session in which you spend most of the time listening and speaking. The teacher asks questions using language from your current Stage and helps you answer in complete sentences.
Questions are often asked twice and at a natural speed. This encourages you to listen carefully, respond more quickly and gradually reduce the habit of translating everything into your first language before speaking.
During the lesson, your teacher will:
- Ask you a continuous series of structured questions.
- Help you produce complete and accurate answers.
- Correct grammar and pronunciation immediately.
- Introduce new vocabulary and language structures.
- Review material from previous lessons regularly.
The pace is intensive, but the lesson is carefully structured. New language and revision are combined so that you continue progressing while strengthening what you have already learned.
How much does Callan Online cost?
The cost depends on the course you choose, the number of lessons you purchase and how frequently you would like to study. We offer structured Progress Plans for students who want to take regular lessons, as well as flexible Lesson Packs for students whose schedules vary from week to week.
Progress Plans generally offer a lower price per lesson in return for committing to a regular learning schedule over a fixed period. Lesson Packs provide more flexibility and give you a longer period in which to use your lesson credits.
Prices may also vary between English, Spanish and Business English courses. You can view the current options, prices, currencies, lesson quantities and validity periods on the relevant pricing page before making a purchase.
Your welcome session is free, so you can check your level and learn more about the course before deciding which plan is right for you.
Can I cancel or reschedule a lesson?
Yes. You can cancel a lesson or change its date and time through your Callan Online account, provided you make the change at least 12 hours before the scheduled starting time.
When a lesson is cancelled within the permitted notice period, the lesson credit can be used again, subject to the expiry date and conditions of your plan.
Lessons cancelled with less than 12 hours’ notice are normally charged because the teacher has reserved that time specifically for you and may not be able to offer it to another student.
We therefore recommend checking your schedule carefully and making any necessary changes as early as possible.
Are the teachers native speakers?
Yes. Callan Online lessons are taught by professional native-speaking teachers. English courses are taught by native English speakers, while Spanish courses are taught by native Spanish speakers.
Our teachers are trained to use the Callan Method and understand the particular pace, correction techniques and question-and-answer structure required during a Callan lesson.
Learning with native-speaking teachers helps you become familiar with natural pronunciation, rhythm and spoken language. It also gives you regular practice understanding real speech and communicating with greater confidence.
You may study with different teachers during your course. This can be beneficial because it exposes you to different voices, accents and speaking styles while every teacher continues to follow the same structured course.
Do I have to buy the eBooks?
No. The relevant Callan eBooks are included with eligible Callan Online learning plans, so you do not normally need to purchase your course materials separately.
Your eBooks support the work you complete with your teacher and allow you to review vocabulary, questions, answers and language structures outside your lessons.
Depending on your course and plan, you may also receive access to the Callan App or Student Platform, where you can find additional resources such as audio recordings, exercises and dictation activities.
These resources are particularly useful for revising between lessons, improving your listening and pronunciation, and preparing for the next part of your course.
How quickly can I improve?
The speed of your progress will depend on factors such as your starting level, how frequently you take lessons, how consistently you attend and how much additional practice you complete between classes.
Students who take regular lessons several times per week generally develop momentum more quickly than students who study only occasionally. Frequent practice helps you become more comfortable responding without translating, improves your listening speed and gives you more opportunities to receive correction.
Many students begin to notice improvements in confidence, listening and response speed relatively early. However, developing lasting fluency requires consistency, revision and sufficient time to practise the language across different Stages.
For the best results, we recommend:
- Taking lessons regularly rather than leaving long gaps.
- Following the lesson frequency included in your chosen plan.
- Reviewing your eBook and course materials.
- Using the Callan App and additional practice activities.
- Accepting corrections and repeating the correct language aloud.

What are the Stages?
The main Callan course is divided into a series of structured Stages. Each Stage introduces new vocabulary, grammar and speaking skills while continuing to revise language from earlier parts of the course.
The Stages are interconnected, allowing students to progress gradually from beginner language to increasingly advanced communication. You do not necessarily need to begin at Stage 1. Your starting Stage will be determined by your current ability during your welcome session and level test.
As you progress, the questions, answers and language structures become more complex. Regular revision remains an important part of every Stage, helping you transfer new language into your long-term memory rather than learning it only temporarily.
Your teacher records the work completed in each lesson, which allows subsequent teachers to continue from the correct point in your course.
How do the Callan Stages correspond to CEFR levels?
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, usually known as the CEFR, describes language ability using six main levels, from A1 for beginners to C2 for highly proficient users.
The approximate correspondence between the Callan Method Stages and the CEFR levels is:
- A1: Callan Stages 1–3.
- A2: Callan Stages 3–5.
- B1: Callan Stages 5–7.
- B2: Callan Stages 8–10.
- C1: Callan Stages 11–12.
These comparisons are approximate rather than exact. Some Callan Stages appear in more than one CEFR range because students develop different language skills gradually throughout a Stage. For example, a student may begin developing A2-level abilities during Stage 3 while still consolidating some A1 language.
Completing a particular Callan Stage does not automatically award an official CEFR qualification or an external examination result. However, the language covered throughout the course can help students build the grammar, vocabulary, listening and speaking skills associated with these levels.
Students preparing for an official examination such as Cambridge English, IELTS, TOEFL or Trinity may also need specific exam preparation, particularly for the required format, writing tasks and examination techniques.
Can companies use Callan Online?
Yes. Callan Online provides language training for companies and organisations that want to improve their employees’ spoken English, listening comprehension, confidence and practical communication skills.
Because lessons are delivered online and booked individually, employees can attend from home, from the office or from another suitable location. This makes it possible to train people working in different cities, countries, departments or time zones.
Corporate training can be organised according to the needs of the company and its employees. Depending on the programme, organisations may also receive centralised invoicing, assistance with student onboarding and information about lesson attendance and progress.
Callan Online can support employees who need English for meetings, international communication, travel, presentations, customer conversations or everyday professional situations. A dedicated Business English course is also available for learners who want to focus specifically on workplace language.
